Group Semai is dedicated to the classical oeuvre arising from the Mediterranean and the Middle East musical traditions, We present both contemporary and older works by well known and lesser known composers, while occasionally offering compositions of our own.
Group Semai features Kevin Germain on Oud and Dan Muscat on Qanun. Kevin has been exploring various musical traditions for some 40 years using what ever instrument spoke with the most urgency. Kevin is known mostly for presenting classical Turkish music on the lute like instrument called the oud. Dan Muscat says, "I grew up in New York City. I've played music since I was little. I started with piano and guitar - folk, classical, rock; over the last 20 years I've added viola and then qanun. I've studied and played Arabic and Turkish music for the past 12 years. I'm Jewish, and there is a deep historic, sonic, and emotional connection between these traditions and my own. I think that's why they have held my attention."
Email us if you would like us to perform in your venue or at your event. We are always interested in talking to other performers who's expertise may find a home with the genre of music we create.
Our requirements are minimum for most performances, for a small intimate setting we may not need amplification, but a venue of 15 or more people we would most likely need access to wall outlets for amplification. We would also require chairs without arms, two standard metal chairs will work fine. Download our stage plot here.
